NAVIDAD: New York y Londres con villancicos en inglés. Año nuevo en China, Nueva York y Londres

La gente de la villa, los villanos, fueron los que adaptaron los antiguos himnos y cantos en latín con los que la Iglesia recordaba la llegada de Jesús, transformándolos en canciones muy dulces e ingenuas. Son esas las canciones que -en honor de sus autores- hoy se conocen con el nombre de villancicos.

Los primeros se originaron, según se cree, en Inglaterra, en la época de Enrique I, los cantos eran en latín y amenizaban las fiestas de la Corte. "El Canto del Jabalí", era llamado canto del villano, y una especie de diminutivo se transformó en villancico para designar estos coros o estribillos.

El día de Navidad fue oficialmente reconocido en el año 345, cuando por influencia de San Juan Crisóstomo y San Gregorio Nacianzeno se proclamó el 25 de diciembre como fecha de la Natividad de Cristo.

Pero algunas de las costumbres tradicionales de la Navidad llegaron más tarde, como la de cantar villancicos que no se agregó hasta la Edad Media.

Por Navidad, los cristianos africanos se reúnen y leen pasajes de la Biblia. Posteriormente realizan bailes y cantos al aire libre. En Etiopía realizan una ceremonia bañándose en los ríos.

Según las crónicas, el pavo de Nochebuena tuvo su origen en México en el S. XVI. Los aztecas se lo hicieron probar a Hernán Cortés, a quien le agradó y lo llevó a España.
